When I first started teaching yoga, I got a lot of interesting questions. Some made me laugh, some made me shake my head, and some made me realize how many myths exist about yoga. Here are a few gems:
“Do I need to be flexible?” NOPE. If you were already flexible, you’d be in Cirque du Soleil, not a yoga class.
“Do I have to be thin to do yoga?” Absolutely not. Yoga is for every shape, every size, every human.
“Is yoga just stretching?” Not even close. Yoga is a practice of breath, movement, and mind. The stretching is just a bonus.
“Is it only for women?” I don’t know who started this rumor, but NO.
“Will I accidentally summon a spirit if I chant? Not unless you're trying to 😳
“Will it hurt my balls?” If you listen to your body and dont attempt to force yourself into a full split on Day 1, youll be fine.
So, what do you actually need to do yoga? Just three things:
1. A body - It doesnt matter what kind. If youre in one, you qualify.
2. A breath - If youre breathing, congrats, youre halfway there.
3. Trust - Your body is smarter than you think. It knows what its doing.
As my teacher once said:
“Your body is supremely intelligent. If you stop overthinking and let it do its thing, it will take care of you. Trust it - it’s been with you all along.”
See you on the mat!
